Conceptual VS Perceptual @ Thursday, 12 January 2012

Today we learnt about conceptual drawings and perceptual drawings.
I was pretty surprised that there is a difference between them as I always thought that art only comes in lines, colors, texture and shapes.

Conceptual art was about free thinking. The belief was that the power of art is behind the thinking not necessarily the finished art. This evolved into a way thinking that emphasized the free thinking of art and to look everywhere and anywhere for ideas. IT is known that any idea is a good idea. Sometimes it is referred as installations.
According to dictionary.com,conceptual drawings means
Art in which the idea presented by the artist is considered more important than the finished product, if any exists.
In the beginning of  1960s, conceptual art was described as anti-establishment when picture the commercial images of Marilyn Monroe popularized by Andy Warhol. Later on, conceptual art became a major modern art/ contemporary art in 1960s and 1970s.
Besides that conceptual art was one of the largest and quickly undertake movements in the 20th century.
Language was a central concern for the first wave of conceptual artists of the 1960s and 1970s. Conceptual artists used language in a place of brush and canvas and allowed it to signify in its own right.

Perceptual Drawings on the other hand is much more different as it focus more on the sensory. Some of the Perceptual Drawings will somethings confused our minds. Another word for Perceptual Drawings is also called as Optical Illusion.
According to dictionary.com, the meaning behind Perceptual Drawings is
Perceptual art is a form of art that can trace its roots to the art history concepts of perceptualism as well as to twentieth century inventions of conceptual art and performance art.
Op art is derived from the constructivist practices of the Bauhaus founded by Walter Gropius whom stressed the relationship of form and function within a framework of analysis and rationality.
The term first appeared in print in Time magazine in October 1964 in response to Julian Stanczak's show Optical Painting at the Martha Jackson gallery .
Op art is a perceptual experience related to how vision functions. It is a dynamic visual art, stemming from a discordant figure-ground relationship that causes the two planes to be in a tense and contradictory juxtaposition.
Op art is created in two primary ways. The first and best known method is the creation of effects through the use of patterns and line. Often these paintings are black and white.Another reaction that occurs is that the lines create after-images of certain colors due to how the retina receives and processes light.
